! A% K( y& v# cmajor financial returns of biotechnology, i.e. bread, beers, wines, cheeses,' E: X+ Z9 @! T! X: N& m
etc. Modern biotechnological processes have generated a wide range of new
& [4 G% y1 C; l* {and novel products including antibiotics, vaccines and monoclonal antibodies,
2 x8 J+ T9 T' N& C' E. c0 ithe production of which has been optimised by improved fermentation
9 Z4 i1 x1 }+ hpractices. Biotechnology has been further revolutionised by a range( @7 o2 D4 ?+ |) ~
of new molecular biology innovations, allowing unprecedented molecular# C3 |7 P$ H7 C: G" j
changes to be made to living organisms. The increasing understanding of  }, L0 n2 r" {5 [
genomics and proteomics has led to the creation of a vast range of transgenic
6 ~# K' G" y: b5 l- ?9 C0 U: z" bmicroorganisms, agricultural (genetically modified) crops and animals,
6 U: l; n  g3 d) \1 r$ pand major new recombinant protein drugs, and has revolutionised
- h5 C5 ~8 g# Kactivities in the traditional food and drinks industries. In the environment,
3 B7 ~1 O+ v4 G; p* hbiotechnology innovations are creating major advances in water" s9 t- L) E" I% W  P0 }8 B, M
and land management and also remediating the pollution generated by% @' n+ k# `3 l+ O& q4 w* T' \
over-industrialisation.( C/ y  m2 L$ t5 o2 H7 v3 a: v
There have been vast investments in molecular diagnostics, not only in- {/ d, J" t! l& L/ D- i: e# \
medicine but in plant and animal agriculture and the environment. Will
( @# ]2 o) \. c% S5 wthe huge potential of stem cells for remedial medicine soon be realised?/ n0 m2 f0 U  J
Until recently, much attention has been given to determining the ‘nuts: D# w5 V4 U* u. J5 b- N+ ~
and bolts’ of biological systems. Now, systems biology is aiming to describe+ n/ o6 h$ E1 T0 i+ i

to develop predictive models of, for example, human disease and

Some of the new aspects of biotechnology, such as genetic engineering,
' a* v* p& |6 Y2 ~have aroused certain social sensitivities of an ethical, moral and political% V0 A; W9 h! h" s% J+ A; ?
character. Regulatory authorities throughout the world are now examining
, x% x' K9 Z& v" @3 i5 M- lthe implications of these new and revolutionary techniques. It is hoped that
! M) K% w+ t9 o( E  c$ Hcommon sense will prevail.
1 \8 q' h! Y6 SUndoubtedly, modern biotechnology can only maximise its full potential# v% b7 B7 s' d( d9 h$ v0 X, x0 t
to benefit mankind through achieving a basis of public understanding,

level of confidence and trust between the scientific community and the; D$ [# g& z4 X- c5 t+ d4 C
